Stromboli: temporary land occupation for the excavation campaign (20 June – 10 July 2026)

The Municipality of Lipari has ordered the temporary occupation of selected land parcels on Stromboli to carry out a summer archaeological excavation campaign, authorised by the Soprintendenza di Messina. The fieldwork aims to document stratigraphy and settlement evidence dating to prehistoric, classical and medieval periods.

Campaign period: 20 June 2026 – 10 July 2026

Scientific director: David Yoon. Excavation concession: renewed with signature dated 1 April 2025 and valid for three years.

Operational details

  • Possession handover: scheduled for 20 June 2026; a report will be drawn up in the presence of owners or, if absent, two witnesses.
  • Archaeological restriction: the area has been under protection since 2016 following the discovery of an occupation with prehistoric, classical and medieval stratigraphy.
  • Compensation for occupation: will be calculated upon completion of works and paid after the areas are handed back, 30 days after publication of the act.

Practical guidance for residents and visitors

  • Access restrictions may apply in the affected zones: avoid marked areas for safety and conservation reasons.
  • Owners or tenants of the parcels are invited to attend the possession handover or be represented; if absent, operations will continue regardless.
  • For updates, clarifications and to view the official act, consult the municipal notice board of the Municipality of Lipari or contact the relevant municipal offices.
