Servaas Neijens in Brescia to highlight UNESCO sites and Lombard heritage

On 6 May 2026 Servaas Neijens, editor-in-chief of the Dutch edition of National Geographic Historia, carried out a press tour in Brescia focused on the main UNESCO-listed sites and the Lombard historical complex.

The visit included inspections of several key urban and Garda-area locations to document cultural assets for an international readership.

• Brixia Archaeological Park: the Capitolium and the Roman Theatre;
• Lombard complex (“Longobardi in Italia: i luoghi del potere”): Piazza Paolo VI, Piazza della Loggia, Old Cathedral, New Cathedral, Basilica of San Salvatore and the Oratory of Santa Maria in Solario;
• Site checks at Palazzo Broletto, Palazzo Loggia, Torrione INA, the Santa Giulia Museum and the Luigi Marzoli Arms Museum within the Castle area;
• Garda stops: the Roman Villa in Desenzano and the Grotte di Catullo in Sirmione.

The initiative, organised with local cultural bodies and institutions, aims to raise international awareness of Brescia's archaeological heritage and to support new cultural visitation initiatives.

Visitor impact: the documentation and heightened visibility are expected to enhance the promotion and sustainable enjoyment of well-preserved archaeological routes in the area.
