Ancient theatre of Herakleia uncovered: excavation results presented in Policoro

The latest archaeological campaign at the site of ancient Herakleia (modern Policoro, MT) has identified the city’s public theatre. Findings were officially presented at the Dinu Adamesteanu National Archaeological Museum in Potenza.

What was discovered

Researchers confirmed the presence and location of a theatre building, previously missing from the urban reconstruction of the polis founded by Taranto in 433 BC. This discovery complements earlier finds—residential areas, sanctuaries and public spaces—and sheds light on civic life and cultural activities in the ancient city.

Funding and project context

The excavations were financed by the Directorate General for Museums of the Ministry of Culture as part of a national programme supporting archaeological campaigns across Italy’s major parks. Funding enabled systematic fieldwork and stratigraphic study of the site.

Participants at the presentation

  • Massimo Osanna – Director General of Italian Museums
  • Vito Bardi – President of the Basilicata Region
  • Vincenzo Telesca and Enrico Bianco – Mayors of Potenza and Policoro
  • Filippo Demma – Interim Director of the National Museums of Matera
  • Carmelo Colelli – Director of the National Museum of the Siritide and scientific director of the excavation
  • Sabrina Mutino – Director of the host museum (moderator)

Archaeological significance and outlook

The theatre’s discovery is a major contribution to the study of Magna Graecia in the Basilicata region: it enables better understanding of urban planning, public life and cultural practices. Operationally, it prompts conservation measures, cataloguing and, in time, public access solutions.

Local impact

This find can support cultural and tourist development along the Ionian coast, complementing the activities of the Herakleia Archaeological Park and the National Museum of the Siritide. Communication plans, guided visits and educational programmes are among the possible initiatives to make the site accessible to visitors.

Next steps

  • Detailed analysis of finds and production of site plans
  • Conservation and safety interventions
  • Design of visitor routes and public information materials
  • Further excavation seasons to expand knowledge of the area

For those interested in Italy’s archaeological heritage, the discovery of Herakleia’s theatre fills a key gap in the city’s history and opens new avenues for research and local valorisation.
