Rothko in Florence: natural light at Palazzo Strozzi illuminates the canvases

From 14 March to 23 August 2026, Palazzo Strozzi presents a selection of Mark Rothko’s works arranged to interact with natural light and the urban setting of Florence. The installation emphasizes city views and architectural context, framing the paintings as part of a sensory route rather than isolated objects.

Curator Elena Geuna designed the exhibition to highlight Rothko’s relationship with space and color: the canvases and paper works on display trace technical developments from early figurative experiments to the expansive color fields and darker series of the 1960s.

What to see

  • Canvases and paper works demonstrating Rothko’s layering technique—translucent coats that build depth and subtle tonal shifts.
  • Stylistic transition from the 1940s–1950s through the so-called “classical” period and the later black-and-grey series.
  • Dialogues with the city: the layout enables visitors to sense the relationship between the artworks and the architectural lines visible from the galleries.

Why visit

The exhibition is an opportunity to observe how natural light alters the perception of Rothko’s color and spatial effects. Layered surfaces, blurred edges and emotional tension in the color fields become more legible within an installation designed to allow sustained contemplation.

Practical visitor tips

  • Allow at least 60–90 minutes to experience the sequence of works without rushing.
  • Vary your viewing distance: move closer to study layers and step back to feel the overall chromatic impact.
  • Check opening times and ticketing on Palazzo Strozzi's official website before visiting.

This exhibition is aimed at visitors interested in contemporary art and painting practice, offering clear insights into the interplay of material, light and perception in the work of a major twentieth-century artist.
