Rothko in Florence: the silence of color

Period: 14 March – 23 August 2026

Palazzo Strozzi presents a major retrospective dedicated to Mark Rothko (1903–1970), conceived to explore connections between his abstract color fields and Florence’s artistic and architectural heritage. The exhibition gathers works from leading international collections and includes special displays in historic city locations.

The exhibition route

The display follows a chronological and thematic sequence, tracing Rothko’s development: early figurative experiments of the 1930s–40s, the Multiforms stage, the large-scale color fields of the 1950s–60s, and late-career series.

  • Early phase: figurative works with symbolic and compositional echoes of Renaissance painting.
  • Transition: neo-surrealist pieces and initial dissolutions of form (Multiforms).
  • Peak abstraction: monumental color-field canvases designed to evoke a sensory and meditative response.
  • Final works: Black and Gray series and paper works that emphasize introspection and formal restraint.

Works and loans

More than seventy works from prominent international museums and collections are on display, including key canvases rarely shown in Italy. The installation emphasizes material and chromatic qualities, facilitating close, contemplative encounters with the paintings.

Dialogues across the city

The project extends beyond Palazzo Strozzi: two significant Florentine institutions host special sections highlighting the places that inspired Rothko during his visits to Italy. These site-specific presentations reveal how he absorbed spatial and spiritual elements from early Renaissance painting and Michelangelesque architecture.

Curatorial approach

The curators have structured the exhibition to foreground the relationships between architecture, painting and spirituality. Galleries are arranged to encourage intimate viewing: controlled lighting and carefully set viewing distances enhance the perceptual and emotional impact of the color fields.
