Through August 23, Palazzo Strozzi presents a major exhibition dedicated to Mark Rothko, designed to highlight the connection between the artist’s chromatic investigation and his experiences in Florence. The show brings together more than seventy works from international collections and examines how encounters with the frescoes of Beato Angelico and the architecture of Michelangelo shaped his practice.
The exhibition follows a chronological layout: from early figurative experiments in the 1930s to the large abstract cycles of the 1950s and 1960s, and the late works on paper. The setup favors quiet, intimate rooms that enhance the emotional resonance of the paintings.
The exhibition also frames Rothko’s ambition to create not merely paintings but ‘‘places’’ of feeling: canvases and murals conceived to engage visitors in contemplative experience. Florence is an apt setting because the city’s chromatic balances and spatial traditions resonate with his art.
The exhibition is suitable for visitors interested in the relationship between modern art and Renaissance legacy, and for those seeking a reflective visual experience: a chance to read Rothko’s color fields against the backcloth of the Tuscan masters who inspired him.
