Ripe San Ginesio: Italy's first village dedicated to 'artiturismo'

Ripe San Ginesio: a pilot village for artiturismo

On 9 May 2026 Ripe San Ginesio inaugurated an innovative local development model centred on traditional crafts: artiturismo. Supported by the Region, Confartigianato and the Municipality, the initiative promotes artisan workshops as cultural hubs and visitor experiences.

The launch coincided with a two-day programme on 9 and 10 May 2026 featuring open workshops, hands-on labs and institutional sessions involving local authorities and trade associations.

Why it matters for historic villages

The scheme recognises craftsmanship as both a production activity and cultural heritage, using it to drive community regeneration. The aim is to build a qualified, distributed hospitality network that can be reproduced in other villages, especially in areas recovering from seismic events or facing depopulation.

What to expect from the programme

  • Workshop visits: artisans open their workshops for demonstrations.
  • Hands-on labs: visitors can learn traditional techniques directly from craftsmen.
  • Panels and testimonials: discussions between institutions, associations and local entrepreneurs on community-based hospitality.
  • Territorial network: collaboration between crafts, catering and accommodation to offer integrated tourist experiences.

Practical information

Dates: 9-10 May 2026. The official ribbon-cutting took place on 9 May, with activities continuing the following day. Some workshops may require prior booking: check with the Municipality or local associations for detailed schedules and registration.

The approach tested in Ripe San Ginesio is intended as a replicable format for other Italian villages seeking sustainable cultural tourism and local revitalisation.
