337 cultural objects repatriated from the United States: presentation in Rome

Today, at the "La Marmora" barracks in Rome, 337 cultural objects repatriated from the United States were officially presented. The group includes mainly archaeological finds, works of art and archival documents that had been illicitly removed and were recovered through investigations carried out between December 2025 and April 2026.

The repatriation follows close cooperation between the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) and several U.S. investigative authorities, including the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Homeland Security Investigations. Joint operations reconstructed illegal supply chains and enabled the return of materials important to the study of ancient history.

Main highlights and notable items

  • Recovered total: 337 cultural objects presented.
  • Breakdown: 221 items repatriated with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office; 116 items returned on 10 April 2026 through coordinated actions with the FBI and HSI.
  • Key pieces: a marble head attributed to Alexander the Great (1st century AD) found in the Roman Forum area, a bronze sculpture from Herculaneum, and two basalt Egyptian statues.
  • Other finds: bronzes, ceramics, jewelry, terracottas and material dating from the Iron Age to the Hellenistic period; among objects returned via HSI are a ship’s rudder, a Canosine vase and Roman coins.

Impact on archaeological sites and research

The return of these materials is significant for reconstructing archaeological contexts and safeguarding collective memory. Recovering objects removed illegally helps reconnect items to their places of origin and makes them available again for scientific study, conservation and public display.

The investigations and legal procedures leading to repatriation reflect sustained international cooperation; the Memorandum of Understanding renewed on 5 December 2025 between Italy and the United States also strengthened customs controls and information-sharing to counter illicit trafficking of archaeological artifacts.

What this means for the public and institutions

Returned items will undergo protection measures, study and conservation programs aimed at improving public and research access. For archaeological sites and museums, the recovery offers opportunities to restore portions of collections and develop more comprehensive exhibition narratives.

In short: the repatriation of 337 objects from the United States demonstrates the effectiveness of international cooperation against illicit cultural trafficking and marks an important step for the protection of Italy’s archaeological heritage.
