The Romantic Garden of the Royal Palace of Naples is open again after a comprehensive restoration that lasted approximately twenty months. The garden reopened during the Easter period and, following a closure on Easter Monday, will be accessible daily from Tuesday 7 April until one hour before sunset.

What was restored

The intervention included upgrades to technical systems, reintegration of architectural elements and renewal of the plantings to recover the garden’s nineteenth-century layout. Landscape architect Marco Ferrari led the design work, focusing on the relationship between architecture, landscape and the historic botanical collection.

• Paved surfaces: 2,750 m² (tuff cocciopesto);
• Lawn area: 3,150 m²;
• New plantings: more than 4,000 specimens, including 20 trees/palms, about 1,300 shrubs and 3,000 herbaceous plants;
• Technical upgrades: improvement of irrigation and maintenance systems to support the restored vegetation.

Botanical approach

The reconstitution of the botanical collection drew on historical inventories compiled by the nineteenth-century botanical gardener, with contemporary adjustments to suit current environmental conditions. Some plantings began in autumn and required seasonal pauses to ensure proper rooting and establishment by spring.
