The monumental cemetery in Bastia Umbra has entered an operational phase through collaboration between the municipal administration and the University of Perugia. The initiative combines academic research, professional practice and institutional commitment to recover and promote a historically significant site.
The initiative links together:
The project merges hands‑on teaching with field surveys and condition assessments. A team of students in Architectural Restoration conducted inspections of funerary structures, identified conservation issues, proposed remedial actions and worked on enhancement strategies. Key activities included:
Academic supervisors with expertise in architectural restoration and structural engineering coordinate the work, supported by engineers and technical offices in charge of the restoration project. This collaboration aligns university training with practical needs and market standards in heritage conservation.
Monumental cemeteries house sculptures, chapels, engraved stones and ironwork that document local history and social changes. Conservation work should go beyond material preservation to improve accessibility and cultural use, strengthening the community's relationship with its historical identity.
The parties are considering a multi‑year agreement to formalise the collaboration, schedule coordinated activities, and ensure continuity in research and restoration efforts. The aim is to create a replicable model for other municipalities with valuable heritage and limited resources.
