On view in Modica, this two-artist exhibition challenges conventional notions of landscape, presenting it as an outcome of perception, memory and mental construction. Curated by Giovanni Scucces and hosted by the SACCA Gallery, the project juxtaposes two complementary approaches that transform landscape from passive backdrop into an active visual element.
Giuseppe Costa shows works where landscape becomes an ephemeral atmosphere: washes, mists and the tactile use of charcoal and pastels blur edges and turn images into fragments of memory. The result is a sensory field hovering between appearance and disappearance.
Carlo Alberto Rastelli responds with constructed imagery: human figures set against backdrops functioning as stage sets, enriched by decorative patterns and pop references. Archival photographs and dream-like motifs combine into landscapes conceived as projections of the psyche, often on wooden panels that contribute materially to the visual narrative.
The exchange between the two practices plays out in the tension between dematerialization and construction: landscape ceases to be mere background and becomes an active component of the works, a place of identity and visual invention.
Visitor tip: allow 30–45 minutes to appreciate the interplay between atmospherics and staged compositions and to engage with the conceptual underpinnings of the exhibition.
