The Archaeological Park of Pompeii has introduced a digital monitoring system and scheduled maintenance procedures aimed at protecting structures, frescoes and mosaics across the expansive site. The strategy shifts focus from emergency restorations to continuous, preventive care.
The solution relies on a digital platform that collects and analyses data from the entire accessible area. Regular inspections and integrated technical reports enable rapid detection of issues such as cracks, water infiltration and surface deterioration, allowing targeted interventions.
Digital monitoring and planned maintenance reduce risks of collapse, vandalism and natural or human-caused degradation. This preventive approach optimizes resources and intervention timing, improving long-term resilience and conservation quality.
The Archaeological Park of Pompeii covers over 66 hectares open to visitors, including houses, temples, public spaces and numerous original finds such as frescoes and mosaics. Integrated conservation and visitor management are essential to protect these irreplaceable elements of Roman history.
The operational model developed at Pompeii can guide other national and international archaeological parks. Implementing monitoring platforms and scheduled maintenance plans supports more efficient, preventive management and can be adapted to different contexts to safeguard cultural heritage.
