New discoveries in the excavations at Porta Stabia, just outside the ancient city's walls, have brought to light two human remains linked to the AD 79 eruption. Researchers used artificial intelligence to produce a digital reconstruction that helps clarify how one of the victims attempted to flee.
The two individuals appear to have died at different stages of the eruption. The older man was found with personal items suggesting attempts to protect himself and to navigate in low visibility: a terracotta mortar placed on his head, a ceramic lamp and a small stash of coins.
AI does not replace archaeologists' expertise but provides tools to integrate data, visualise complex scenarios and make results more accessible. Such techniques improve understanding of eruption dynamics and the behaviours of inhabitants during escape attempts.
Experts consider AI-based models useful for conservation, academic study and immersive storytelling about the ancient world, provided specialists with humanistic and scientific training guide their development. Reconstructions can help engage wider audiences with archaeological discoveries.
The discovery is part of ongoing excavation work and will undergo further specialist study. For official updates on site openings, visits and announcements, consult the institutional channels of the Pompeii Archaeological Park.
