Friuli Venezia Giulia Allocates €900,000 for Protection of UNESCO Sites

€900,000 Extraordinary Fund for UNESCO Sites in Friuli Venezia Giulia

The Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia approved an extraordinary measure on 24 April 2026 to support the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO. The allocation provides direct grants to municipalities hosting UNESCO sites to finance conservation, sustainable visitation and promotional actions.

Beneficiaries and allocations

  • Cividale del Friuli: €405,000 (€150,000 current expenses, €255,000 capital) — linked to the theme "The Lombards in Italy. Places of Power".
  • Palmanova: €295,000 (€250,000 current, €45,000 capital) — for conservation and enhancement of Venetian defensive works from the 16th–17th centuries.
  • Caneva (Palù di Livenza): €200,000 (€100,000 current, €100,000 capital) — supporting the pile-dwelling site.

Eligible interventions

Funds may be used for targeted actions to improve site protection and visitor experience:

  • conservation and routine maintenance of monuments and structures;
  • infrastructure projects for visitor routes, signage and accessibility;
  • museum initiatives and communication projects promoting sustainable tourism;
  • restoration works and cultural enhancement programmes.

Impact for visitors and local administrations

Visitors will benefit from clearer routes, updated signage and improved local services. Municipal administrations will be able to launch restoration sites and development programmes aimed at safeguarding the assets and strengthening the cultural offer.

Practical advice

If you plan to visit Cividale del Friuli, Palmanova or Palù di Livenza, check the official municipal websites for updates on temporary works, alternative paths and new promotional initiatives funded by the measure.
