Pompeii: discoveries at the Porta Stabia necropolis

Archaeological works in the area outside Pompeii’s city walls, at the Porta Stabia necropolis, uncovered the skeletal remains of two men who attempted to flee the AD 79 Vesuvius eruption. The finds provide fresh evidence to better understand the event’s dynamics and escape routes toward the coast.

Findings from the excavation

  • Two individuals who died at different moments, with injuries consistent with pyroclastic phenomena.
  • One skeleton shows marks compatible with being struck by a pyroclastic flow; the other appears to have died following the fall of lapilli and pyroclastic debris.
  • Personal items were found near the bodies: a broken terracotta mortar, a ceramic oil lamp (lucerna), a small iron ring on the left little finger and a handful of ten bronze coins.
  • Body positions and the condition of the artefacts help reconstruct the actions of those fleeing and the levels of visibility and protection during the eruption.

Digital reconstruction and AI use

A digital experimental reconstruction of one of the victims was produced using artificial intelligence software combined with photo-editing techniques to make results more accessible. Specialists emphasize that AI should be used rigorously as a supportive tool that cannot replace archaeological expertise and critical interpretation.

Research implications and access

The new discoveries deepen knowledge of the AD 79 eruption dynamics and offer material for further study of coastal escape routes. Excavations continue as part of the Parco Archeologico di Pompei campaigns, with ongoing protection, cataloguing and analysis activities.
