Yelena’s Garden is the installation representing the Republic of Haiti at the 61st International Art Exhibition in Venice. Created by Enock Placide and curated by Mario Savini, the work configures an open, participatory space where painting, moving image and interaction redefine visibility.
The installation consists of a constellation of elements — rectangular and circular canvases, a double-sided painted panel, a glass sphere and a video — arranged in a loose hexagonal formation that avoids fixed boundaries. The piece denies a single privileged viewpoint and encourages visitors to move and alter the visual composition.
The work operates through subtraction and subtle chromatic shifts: rectangular canvases evoke everyday phenomena such as sunsets, while circular formats suggest cosmic imagery. The glass sphere and central panel alter spatial perception; the video creates temporal discontinuities that converse with the painted surfaces.
Yelena’s Garden asks for a deliberate pace: walk through the installation slowly, pay attention to painterly details and let the video reshape your sense of temporality. The piece is meant to be experienced rather than instantly decoded, privileging reflection and participation.
Note: the arrangement is intended to be flexible and may change during the exhibition run.
