The Church of Santa Maria della Spina in Pisa hosts the exhibition “The Aprons of Mary”, a solo show by painter Pino Biggi curated by Paola Marini. The opening will take place on Tuesday 12 May 2026 at 12:00. The exhibition is on view until Sunday 21 June 2026.
The show focuses on an iconographic theme Biggi explored in the 1990s: in these works, defined by the artist as “the aprons of Mary”, only the lower halves of seated Madonnas are depicted, creating a dialogue between sacred tradition and the church’s architectural setting.
Across the exhibition run, the organizing association’s theatre company presents dramatized readings from “Novelle, quasi fiabe”, unpublished texts by Biggi, with performances curated by Daniela Bertini.
The exhibition creates a meaningful encounter between Biggi’s contemporary pictorial language and the historic church setting, giving visitors a chance to engage with a recurrent sacred motif reinterpreted by an artist with a long-standing presence in Italian culture.
