Patù and archaeology in Capo di Leuca: what to see and how to join

Patù, a small town in the Lecce province, is experiencing renewed archaeological activity involving research centers, local associations and young volunteers. The local heritage ranges from Messapian and Roman necropolises to medieval monuments, feeding projects for conservation and public engagement.

Main sites and finds

  • Palazzo Romano: hosts the local museum with inscriptions, funerary markers and daily-use objects recovered from tombs; also offers educational workshops for children.
  • Centopietre: funerary monument built with blocks from nearby Vereto, showing traces of frescoes and located near the Romanesque church of San Giovanni Battista.
  • Necropolises of Campo Re, Fondo Cavalli and della Cupa: Messapian and Roman tombs accessible through guided walks and archaeological trails.
  • Marina di San Gregorio: coastal area with remains of Messapian and Roman quay stones and rock-cut beacons.
  • Vereto hill: the acropolis considered central for Messapian studies, where excavation campaigns and evening cultural events take place.

Events and excavations

Among upcoming events is the Corpus Domini celebration where, on 7 June 2026, Via Principe di Napoli will be decorated with petal carpets. In May and June cultural and musical evenings are held at Vereto as part of the "Vespri a Vereto" series, alongside excavation campaigns run by universities and regional museums.

Visitor tips

  • Check the local events calendar and museum openings with the Municipality of Patù or the Pro Loco before traveling.
  • Join educational workshops and guided archaeological walks offered by local associations (such as Archès and Archeorete del Mediterraneo) for an interactive visit.
  • For active excavation sites, follow official instructions from the University or the museum authority for safe visits and updates on the findings.

Patù combines archaeology, coastal scenery and local traditions: an invitation to explore the Messapian legacy, Roman traces and medieval heritage across the Capo di Leuca.
