Easter Monday at the Appian Way parks: enjoy the day while protecting the area

The green spaces along the Appian Way, from the Caffarella to the park of the Aqueducts, are popular destinations for Easter Monday. To ensure a pleasant day and protect the natural and archaeological heritage, the park promotes a few simple rules as part of the "Picnic Yes, No Waste" campaign.

Main rules to follow

  • Barbecues: grills may be used only if raised at least 30 cm from the ground. In the Caffarella area, grilling is allowed exclusively in the designated area accessible from the via Latina entrance.
  • Safety distances: keep at least 10 metres away from monuments, walls and trees to protect roots and archaeological features.
  • Waste: bins are not permanently available in the parks: separate your waste and take it out with you at the end of your picnic. Leaving the area clean is essential.
  • Access and order: follow marked paths and avoid parking or blocking access ways that could hinder emergency services.

Services and supervision

Volunteers with maps and collection bags may be on site, along with additional waste collection crews and municipal police officers managing traffic. Visitor cooperation is key to keeping the day safe and orderly.

Practical tips for a nature-friendly Easter Monday

  • Arrive early: green areas fill up quickly on sunny holidays.
  • Choose sustainable transport: bike, public transport or shuttle services if available.
  • Bring reusable tableware, separate bags for recycling and a refillable water bottle.
  • Check where fires are permitted and fully extinguish coals or embers before leaving.
  • Respect plants, wildlife and archaeological remains: do not pick plants or climb on ruins or ancient walls.

By following these straightforward guidelines, Easter Monday at the Appian Way parks can remain a pleasant and sustainable tradition: enjoy the outdoors, respect the spaces and carry your waste out with you.
