Easter and Easter Monday: museums open and special openings in Tuscany

Autore: Redazione 31/03/2026 14:32

Museums in Tuscany for Easter and Easter Monday

During the Easter holidays many museums in Tuscany offer special openings: Easter Sunday often falls on the first Sunday of the month and may allow free admission, while on Easter Monday some venues remain open with a regular ticket. Below is a practical guide to notable sites and temporary displays.

Florence

At the Museo di San Marco visitors can see the Sala del Beato Angelico, reopened with a new layout showcasing 33 panels by the friar-painter, including works recently restored and re-exhibited. On the first floor, the special section Rothko in Florence displays five Mark Rothko works placed in dialogue with frescoes from cells that inspired his color and spiritual investigations.

Arezzo and surroundings

Several state museums in the Arezzo area offer festive openings and cultural programs:

  • Gaio Cilnio Mecenate Archaeological Museum: hosts an exhibition on the Minerva of Arezzo, tracing the bronze statue’s discovery and collecting history, accompanied by events, workshops and outreach activities.
  • Casa Vasari Museum: the Camera di Abramo is open again, a prime example of Vasari’s Mannerist decoration; the hanging garden is also accessible.
  • National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art: a chronological route showcasing Arezzo’s artistic production from the early Middle Ages to the 19th century.
  • Abbey of Soffena (Castelfranco Piandiscò): open on Easter Monday to view late Gothic and Renaissance frescoes, including a work by Scheggia.
  • Sodo Archaeological Area (Cortona) and Palazzo Taglieschi: sites for exploring local traditions, popular arts and Etruscan finds.

Livorno province and Elba

  • Villa San Martino, Portoferraio (National Museum of Napoleonic Residences): tour the summer residence of Napoleon with rooms, decorations and objects linked to his exile on Elba.
  • Castiglioncello Archaeological Museum: opens for Easter with selected displays of local archaeological material.

Practical tips

Check each museum’s official website or contact the administration before visiting, as special openings may require timed entry or reservations. When Easter Sunday is the first Sunday of the month many venues offer free admission; Easter Monday typically follows normal ticketing rules.

Use this overview to plan cultural visits during the holidays and to take advantage of temporary exhibitions and museum re-openings across Tuscany.
