Palazzo Reale – the “Skinny Liberty” of Potenza

Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 09:14

History and description

In the heart of Potenza’s historic center, Palazzo Reale stands out for its unusual profile and strong presence within the city’s urban fabric. Designed in the 1920s on commission from Ascanio Branca, a Lucanian politician and patriot, the project was entrusted to architect Giuseppe Pisanti and later completed, after Branca’s death, by engineer Saverio Reale, who gave his name to the entire building. The construction reached its final form in 1927. Its architecture is a distinctive example of the Liberty style, characterized by a trapezoidal plan, a façade with a rhythm of windows framed by pilasters, and variations that include loggias, balustrades, decorative friezes, and ornamental choices that suggest an intention beyond mere aesthetics.

Curiosities

Many details capture the observer’s attention, such as the arrangement of the windows and loggias, or the presence of ornamental and symbolic elements like shell‑shaped friezes and geometric motifs, which invite reflection on the desire to communicate not only through form but also through imagery.

Access

As a private building, Palazzo Reale is not always accessible like a museum, but it can be freely admired from the outside.

How to reach it

Located in the historic center, the palace can be reached by car, with parking available nearby, on foot, or by public transport from the city center.

With its strong presence and original style, Palazzo Reale is an ideal vantage point to grasp the tensions between tradition and modernity that animate Potenza.
