Palazzo della Rovere – future cultural hub in the Renaissance heart of Savona

Autore: Redazione 04/10/2025 15:48

History and description

Located in the historic center of Savona, just a few steps from the cathedral and the port, Palazzo della Rovere is a refined example of Renaissance architecture. Its construction began in 1493 at the will of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, the future Pope Julius II, who wished to create in his hometown a residence worthy of his ecclesiastical rank, following a design by Giuliano da Sangallo.

The building, with a quadrangular plan organized around a central courtyard, was intended to be a true cardinal’s residence, modeled on the great Roman and Florentine courts. Over time, however, it was transformed into a convent, an administrative headquarters, and later a courthouse, before remaining for years partly inaccessible and in a state of neglect. Today, Palazzo della Rovere is at the center of an ambitious cultural redevelopment project aimed at transforming it into a cultural and social hub open to the city, with a modern library, study rooms, laboratories, event spaces, a terrace with a botanical garden, and an urban lounge.

Curiosities

During the restoration works, previously unknown archaeological structures and ancient decorations were uncovered, further enriching the historical value of the palace.

Access

At present, the palace is not yet permanently open to visitors, as it is still undergoing renovation.

How to reach it

Palazzo della Rovere is located in the center of Savona, in an area easily accessible by car via the A10 motorway (Savona exit), by city bus on various lines, and on foot from Savona railway station.

A symbol of Ligurian Renaissance and of Savona’s cultural rebirth, Palazzo della Rovere is preparing to return as a protagonist, balancing historical memory with new visions of community.
