Palazzo dell’Acquedotto Pugliese – the temple of water in the heart of Bari

Autore: Redazione 02/10/2025 07:34

History and description

Built between 1925 and 1932, based on a project by engineer Cesare Brunetti, the Palazzo dell’Acquedotto Pugliese rises in the center of Bari as a symbol of the great water supply project that transformed life in Southern Italy. The building, which still houses the headquarters of the Apulian Aqueduct, is a perfect example of early 20th‑century eclectic architecture, with strong references to medieval and Renaissance art. The façade, clad in local stone, is characterized by mullioned windows, rose windows, and sculptural decorations inspired by Apulian Romanesque art. Inside, visitors find elegant halls, marble floors, and decorated wooden ceilings, among which the monumental Salone della Fontana stands out, rich in symbolism linked to water and fertility. Conceived not only as a functional building but as a true “temple of water”, the palace reflects the central role of the Apulian Aqueduct in the social and economic development of the region.

Curiosities

The building houses a valuable collection of artworks, including frescoes, mosaics, and stained‑glass windows created by master artists of the time. Particularly striking is the symbolic use of water in every decorative detail: from mythological marine figures carved into the capitals to the play of light evoking water reflections on surfaces. Moreover, the foundations of the building were designed to host cisterns and channels, making it a masterpiece also from an engineering perspective.

Access

Open for visits by reservation from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, the Palazzo dell’Acquedotto Pugliese offers guided tours at the cost of €6, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located on Via Cognetti, in the heart of Bari, the palace is easily reachable on foot from the central railway station or by car, with parking available nearby.

Between art, engineering, and beauty, the Palazzo dell’Acquedotto is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered in the heart of Apulia.
