New Ruggi Hospital: contract changes for archaeological excavations and cost implications

The construction of the new "San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona" hospital in Salerno has undergone a contractual amendment concerning archaeological excavation works. A regional decree dated 18 March 2026 approved an additional act to address conditions discovered during site operations.

The local Superintendency for archaeology required deeper excavations — down to about three metres — to rule out the presence of previously undetected finds. Expanding the scope of excavation has led to a notable increase in the overall cost estimate.

  • Reason: deeper investigations requested to protect historical heritage.
  • Depth: digging extended to approximately 3 metres compared with the initial plan.
  • Cost change: the excavation budget rose from roughly €782,000 to more than €1.12 million.

These adjustments highlight how work in archaeologically sensitive areas can require unforeseen checks that affect both budget and scheduling. While the measures prioritize heritage protection, they also introduce planning and financial challenges for the regional authorities and contractors.

Practical notes for residents and stakeholders:

  • Additional excavation work may cause delays to the overall construction timeline.
  • Regional authorities and responsible bodies will update contracts and procurement documents to incorporate the changes.
  • Preserving archaeological remains is the priority: deeper investigations help avoid damage to cultural assets.

We will monitor developments and report any further administrative decisions, revised timelines, or impacts on the project's schedule.
