Sancascianese Medieval Carnival: a national meeting of traditions

The historic centre of San Casciano will once again become a medieval stage: on Sunday 29 March the 14th edition of the Sancascianese Medieval Carnival brings together delegations and historical groups from across Italy, alongside the five local contrade. The event highlights the area’s historical roots and offers a show suitable for families, history enthusiasts and visitors to Italian villages.

Participants

  • National delegations: Carnival of Viareggio, Foiano della Chiana Carnival, Historical Carnival of Verrès (Aosta Valley), International Association of the Venice Carnival, Medieval Carnival of Calenzano, Folkloric group from Castrovillari (Calabria).
  • Local contrade: Cavallo, Gallo, Giglio, Leone, Torre.
  • Around 160 people taking part in the parade and performances.

Program and practical information

The procession will start in the early afternoon and wind through the central streets, concluding at Piazza della Repubblica where main performances will be held. Practical tips:

  • Recommended time: arrive early; the official start is scheduled for the early afternoon (around 15:00).
  • Location: San Casciano historic centre, with viewing points in Piazza della Repubblica and along the route.
  • Accessibility: the village is best explored on foot; nearby parking and transport links serve the centre, but expect high demand on busy days.
  • What to see: costumed parades, traditional music, performances by the contrade and guest groups.
  • Tips: dress for the season, check municipal updates on traffic and parking, and take the opportunity to explore local shops and Chianti products.
