Nino Springolo at Museo Bailo, Treviso: a retrospective on an independent practice

From 14 March to 1 November 2026, the Museo Bailo in Treviso presents a comprehensive exhibition on Nino Springolo (1886–1975). Curated by Fabrizio Malachin, Eleonora Drago and Manlio Leo Mezzacasa, the show brings together about one hundred works from public and private collections to trace the career of a central yet understated figure of the Veneto art scene in the early 20th century.

Why visit

The exhibition highlights Springolo's stylistic independence from the historical avant-gardes and from local art currents. The display emphasizes his inward, reflective approach to painting, which assimilates post-Impressionist color sectioning, Divisionist experiments and Cézanne's lessons, evolving in later years toward compositions with near-naïf traits.

Highlights

  • Approximately 100 works, many shown to the public for the first time.
  • A section dedicated to Springolo's «two companions»: works by Gino Rossi and Arturo Martini that contextualize his artistic relationships.
  • Works drawn from private collections and museum deposits, including recent loans that will remain at the museum after the exhibition ends.
  • An itinerary illustrating technical phases: sectional chromatisms, Divisionist solutions and dialogues with classical masters.

Curators and exhibition concept

Curators Fabrizio Malachin, Eleonora Drago and Manlio Leo Mezzacasa designed a project that goes beyond a standard monograph: the inclusion of contemporaries and close associates helps frame Springolo's work within networks of artistic and personal exchange while maintaining focus on his individual trajectory.

Practical information

Dates: 14 March – 1 November 2026.
Venue: Museo Bailo, Treviso (Municipal Museums).

Significance

The exhibition re-evaluates an artist who charted a personal course within the broader European context of the early 20th century: his deliberate working rhythm and refusal of passing fashions emerge as central to understanding a consistent and authentic artistic pursuit.
