In April 2026 the team at Parco Natura Viva recorded the hatching of an African dwarf crocodile, one of the smallest crocodile species and listed as vulnerable. The newborn measured about 28 cm at birth.
The female had buried the nest as a protective behavior; after discovering some eggs, staff observed the male bringing an egg to the surface and breaking it. Crews then excavated to locate the actual nest and recovered an egg that gave clear signs of life. The egg was placed in an incubator and monitored continuously, leading to hatching roughly 24 hours after discovery.
The hatchling was placed in a habitat furnished with bark, small branches and green plants to encourage natural hiding behavior: it alternates active periods with resting among vegetation, typical for the species. Staff continue daily monitoring to adjust feeding and environmental conditions during growth.
Why this matters: the successful hatching is a positive outcome for captive care and management programs for reptiles and provides useful insights into reproductive behaviour and rearing techniques for a vulnerable species.
