May Day Weekend: six spring walks with a view
The May Day long weekend is a perfect moment to get back outdoors: longer daylight, spring blooms and mild temperatures make trails inviting. Here are six suggestions from north to south, suitable for different experience levels.
- Piedmont – Monte Mucrone (from Oropa): start at the Santuario di Oropa (~1,300 m). The route goes through forest to Alpe della Pissa (1,450 m), passes Lago del Mucrone and climbs to the summit at 2,335 m. Approx. elevation gain ~1,000 m; ascent ~3 hours, loop ~5 hours. Recommended for fit hikers: no technical difficulties but exposed at altitude.
Where: Via Santuario D'Oropa 480, 13900 Oropa (BI).
- Lombardy – Borghetto and Monzambano (Mincio loop): an easy 7 km loop along the Mincio river with historical villages, embankments and wetlands. Great for families or those seeking a short, flat walk with scenic views.
- Emilia‑Romagna – Lago Scaffaiolo: a trek in the Tuscan‑Emilian Apennines among high‑altitude lakes and alpine meadows. Beautiful mountain scenery; check weather and possible residual snow at elevation.
- Tuscany – turquoise coasts and ridgelines: routes combining sea views and sunny hills. Ideal for a half‑day outing with panoramic stops and spring photography.
- Lazio – Lepini Mountains (Semprevisa): ridge and hillside walks with wide views over the Lazio countryside. Difficulty ranges from moderate to challenging depending on the chosen trail; suitable for mid‑altitude trekking.
- Sicily – coastal and hill trails: mild climate and Mediterranean light make Sicily perfect for spring walks along coasts and hills, with seasonal blooms and characteristic landscapes.
Practical tips
- Plan: pick routes that match your fitness; check duration and elevation gain and schedule rest stops.
- Gear: sturdy hiking shoes, lightweight wind/rain jacket, water and energy snacks. Bring warm layers and sunglasses for higher elevations.
- Logistics: confirm parking and transport options and seasonal restrictions. In busy spots, start early to secure parking and enjoy quiet trails.
- Safety and environment: stick to marked paths, carry out any waste and protect local flora and fauna. In mountains, monitor forecasts and let someone know your plans.
Book or plan in advance and adjust the route to your training: the right walk can turn the May Day break into a refreshing nature experience.
