From late March 2026 visitors can access a striking elevated itinerary on the rooftops of Naples Cathedral. Known as the "500 Domes" route, it reveals a unique perspective on the historic centre, with Vesuvius and the sea framing a landscape dotted by numerous domes.
The walk begins at the Chapel of the Most Illustrious and crosses sections of the cathedral that were previously closed to the public, leading to rooftop walkways. From there you can spot the Sanità valley, the Borgo dei Vergini, the Vomero skyline and landmarks like Castel Sant'Elmo.
The project is promoted by the Museo Diocesano Diffuso (MUDD) in partnership with local foundations and the municipal administration. It combines tourist access with heritage enhancement measures, a training programme for young guides and the opening of an information point in the cathedral courtyard.
The route offers more than just panoramic views: it provides insight into the historical and religious layers of the city centre. For those interested in small towns and historic quarters, this experience connects landscape, architecture and communal memory in a compact, evocative visit.
The initiative is part of a broader regeneration plan supported by public funds and foundations; further extensions of the route are planned by 2027 to add new visiting areas and cultural activities.
