Myth on Pottery: Ningxia exhibition pairs Apulian ceramics with Chinese

Myth on Pottery: a cultural dialogue between the Mediterranean and China at the Ningxia Museum

The "Myth on Pottery" exhibition in Yinchuan showcases a selection of Apulian ceramics, sculptures and glassware paired with historical Chinese artifacts. The project is designed not only as a display of objects but as an active exchange platform for curators, conservators and scholars from Europe and China.

  • Location: Ningxia Museum, Yinchuan
  • Dates: March 25, 2026 – June 25, 2026 (approx. three months)
  • Works on display: about 115 items from Apulia alongside Chinese national treasures, including Zhou dynasty pieces and objects with Persian and Roman decorative influences
  • Collaboration: an Italian–Chinese curatorial team with technical exchanges on restoration materials and conservation methods

The exhibition intentionally creates side-by-side juxtapositions—for example, a 4th-century BCE Greek crater from Apulia displayed next to a gilded silver jug from the Bactrian region. These pairings highlight transcontinental iconographic echoes and the historical role of Ningxia along ancient Silk Road routes.

Beyond the galleries, the Italian delegation visited the museum's conservation centre and local archaeological sites, engaging in hands-on discussions about restoration techniques and regional heritage values.

For visitors, the show is an opportunity to explore lesser-known cultural connections between Europe and China and to see direct comparisons that reveal how different environments shape artistic expression.

Visitor practicalities

  • Guided tours: thematic tours on ceramic techniques and conservation may be available; enquire at the museum
  • Tips: attend public talks or seminars connected to the exhibition to deepen your understanding of the collaborative aspects
