National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia: the Roman city that still speaks

In the heart of the Friulian plain, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic Sea, stands a place where time seems suspended and history finds its voice once again: the National Archaeological Museum of Aquileia. The museum is located at Via Roma 1, not far from the remains of the Roman forum and the famous Patriarchal Basilica with its early Christian mosaics. The building that houses it was constructed between the late 18th and early 19th centuries as a private residence and, since 1882, has hosted one of the richest archaeological collections in Northern Italy.
Following a major restoration and redesign completed in 2018, the exhibition route guides visitors on a journey from the origins of the Roman city to the Late Antiquity period, telling stories of trade, crafts, cults, and daily life.

A City, Its People, Its Memory

The heart of the museum is represented by floor mosaics, marble sculptures, and inscriptions that reveal Aquileia’s identity as a cosmopolitan center of the Empire. Each room unveils a fragment of life: amphorae that crossed the sea, coins bearing the effigies of emperors, delicate glassware from the East, jewelry and amulets that reflect the tastes and beliefs of Aquileian families.
Alongside the artifacts, multimedia installations and educational panels help reconstruct the urban and social fabric of the city, once bustling with merchants, artisans, and soldiers from across the Roman world.
