Museums and youth: the national picture

Data from 2022 indicate that less than half of Italian young people aged 6 to 17 visited a museum in the previous year. The national average is around 40%, with significant territorial and social variations.

Trento as an exception

The autonomous Province of Trento stands out with markedly higher participation: nearly 62% of minors visited a cultural site, the highest rate in the country. Veneto follows at about 49%.

Socio-economic and operational disparities

There is a clear correlation between family income and museum visits: only 11.3% of children from low-income families visited a cultural site, compared with 36.9% in high-income households. On availability, roughly 40% of Italian museums are open more than 250 days per year; in Trentino this share falls to 29%.

Why these figures matter

Italy also hosts 61 UNESCO sites, underlining the richness of its cultural heritage: unequal access suggests that not all young people benefit equally. Income, educational offers and local policies strongly affect participation.

Practical suggestions to boost youth visits

  • School partnerships and educational programs: strengthen cooperation with schools for guided visits and curricular projects.
  • Pricing and concessions: offer discounts, free entries or targeted passes for low-income families and large households.
  • Engaging activities: develop hands-on workshops, multimedia trails and events designed for children and teens.
  • Targeted communication: promote museum offers via digital channels, social media and school networks.
  • Accessibility and opening times: adapt schedules and services to reach families in areas with fewer open days.

For museum professionals and local authorities, these indicators provide actionable suggestions to increase youth engagement with cultural heritage and reduce inequalities.
