Monumenti Aperti in Sassari: 48 sites open on 2–3 May 2026

Monumenti Aperti returns to Sassari for a weekend celebrating the city's heritage: on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 May 2026, 48 sites—including churches, historic palaces, museums and natural areas—will be accessible to the public.

The event, coordinated by the municipal Culture and Tourism offices, aims to showcase the city's history while engaging younger generations as active promoters of local heritage.

New openings and re-openings

• Seven venues will open for the first time during the event, such as Teatro Verdi, the University Botanical Garden and the "Mario Sironi" Academy of Fine Arts.
• Notable reopenings include the Parco di Monserrato and, after 12 years, the Barbacane of the Aragonese Castle.

Themed routes

The sites are grouped into four thematic routes to simplify visits:

• Heart of the historic centre: Palazzo Ducale, St Nicholas Cathedral, the Duke's rooms and cellars, the diocesan historical archive and other central sites.
• Within the walls: main churches, Rosello Fountain, Palazzo d'Usini, the Barbacane and institutional buildings.
• Beyond the walls: Teatro Verdi, the Brigata Sassari historical museum, university library and Santa Maria di Betlem museum complex.
• City and territory, between history and nature: Piandanna Botanical Garden, Ex-Convent of San Pietro in Silki, Argentiera mine and peripheral heritage sites.

Itineraries and outdoor programmes

Six itineraries cover the municipal area, offering nature and heritage experiences:

• Coastal trail at Argentiera (Sunday 3, reservation required, medium-high difficulty) guided by environmental guides.
• Tours along the ancient city walls and visits to Liberty-style villas in the Cappuccini district.
• Guided nature walks at Lake Baratz (Saturday 2, booking required) and rural paths with the local CAI group on Sunday 3.

Events, exhibitions and inauguration

The official opening is scheduled for Saturday 2 May at 16:15 in Piazza Castello with local officials and the Conservatory's Marching Band. The programme includes more than 40 events—concerts, workshops and thematic visits—and ten exhibitions, including a special show at Padiglione Tavolara.

Guided visits and schools

Students from local schools will take an active role as guides and hosts, offering visitors an educational perspective on Sassari's cultural assets.
