A community-led act of solidarity: recently a delegation from the Contrada della Torre crochet group in Montepulciano delivered a collection of handmade items to the Pediatric and Neonatal wards and to Obstetrics and Gynecology at Nottola hospital.
The donated pieces, the result of many hours of careful handiwork, included:
The impact of the gesture: beyond their practical use, these gifts were valued for the time and thought invested. Marco Cencini, director of Obstetrics and Gynecology, highlighted how such donations help make the hospital environment warmer and more welcoming, easing pressure on families during admissions.
The volunteers, led by Tiziana Marchetti, described the emotional experience of visiting the wards and the strong rapport they found with healthcare staff — a clear example of how a borough’s artisanal tradition can become tangible social support.
Why this matters for borgo communities: initiatives like this showcase the social capital of historic towns, promote local volunteering and strengthen ties between communities and regional health services. Small gestures can powerfully express a borgo’s commitment to the common good.
Those wishing to organize similar efforts should coordinate with local social services or hospital departments to align on needs and hygienic standards — proper coordination ensures donations are safe and truly helpful.
