Montecassino heads to UNESCO: abbey’s protected area doubled

Autore: Redazione 18/04/2026 06:35

Montecassino moves toward UNESCO: protected zone expanded

Cassino has been designated as the coordination hub for the evaluation of the Benedictine Monasteries' nomination to UNESCO World Heritage status. Technical inspections recommended expanding the landscape protection around Montecassino Abbey: the protection radius would increase from the current 500 metres to 1,000 metres, reaching the Albaneta area.

What changes

  • The landscape protection zone will be widened and the measure requires approval by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of the Environment.
  • Cassino will host the evaluation commission that organizes the documentation and technical meetings.
  • The nomination dossier will be assessed first by UNESCO offices in Rome and then by the operational office in Paris.

Timeline and outlook

  • An official decision on the recognition of the four monasteries is scheduled for the first half of 2028.
  • The candidate sites are Montecassino, Subiaco, Santa Maria di Farfa (Rieti) and San Vincenzo al Volturno (Isernia).
  • Ceremonies linked to the 1,500th anniversary of Montecassino’s foundation are planned for 2029, accompanied by cultural events and territorial initiatives.

Local cooperation and promotion

Municipalities involved have submitted a joint statement and pledged to cooperate on cultural promotion, training and research projects. The effort is supported by regional universities and cultural bodies through thematic studies and comparative analyses to strengthen the serial nomination.

Practical implications for visitors

  • New restrictions or guidelines may be introduced within the extended protection belt (up to 1,000 metres from the Abbey) to safeguard the landscape and historic setting.
  • Visitors should check the Comune di Cassino website and local tourist offices for updates on access, regulations and event schedules.

The UNESCO nomination process involves technical and administrative stages: extending the protection zone is a tangible measure to safeguard the abbey’s heritage and enhance the cultural significance of the Benedictine monastic sites included in the candidacy.
