On April 9, 2026 Galleria Poggiali in Milan opens Táifinakpo’, the first solo exhibition in Italy by artist Gisela McDaniel. Conceived as a site-specific installation, the presentation brings together thirteen works encompassing large-scale oil paintings, paper works and audio-based elements.
McDaniel’s practice foregrounds intergenerational memory and voices that have often been marginalized. Through painted portraits, recorded interviews and found objects, the artist amplifies the presence of her sitters—frequently women and non-binary people with Micronesian, Indigenous and mixed backgrounds—challenging conventional power dynamics in representation.
The exhibition title, Táifinakpo’, evokes a concept of continuity beyond linear time, addressing themes of healing, persistence and ancestral presence. Many canvases include artifacts contributed by the subjects, reinforcing the collaborative nature of the portraits.
Gisela McDaniel (b. 1995 in Bellevue, Nebraska) lives and works in New York. Her multidisciplinary approach—combining oil painting, assemblage and audio—has been shown internationally and is represented in several public and private collections.
