Milano Design Week 2026: museums and must-see events

When: 20–26 April 2026. During Design Week, Milan's museums dedicated to design present special programs featuring exhibitions, site-specific installations and public talks.

The main venues to note are Triennale Milano and the ADI Design Museum, both offering a mix of retrospective displays, guest projects and a packed schedule of events.

Triennale Milano: exhibitions and installations

Triennale's program spans historical surveys and contemporary research, with shows that extend beyond the seven days of the event.

  • Barber | Osgerby. Alphabet – a retrospective covering thirty years of the British duo’s work, presented as an 'alphabet' of forms and ideas. Some sections may be free to access.
  • Andrea Branzi by Toyo Ito – a collaboration with Fondation Cartier, curated and installed by Toyo Ito. Toyo Ito will give a public lecture on 20 April at 11:00. Paid admission applies.
  • Lella and Massimo Vignelli. A Language of Clarity – an exhibition showcasing the duo’s design legacy through objects, graphics and archival materials. Paid admission.
  • The new Museum of Italian Design and the reconstructed Casa Lana by Ettore Sottsass provide permanent and temporary displays. Paid entry.
  • Outdoor installations and guest projects in the garden and external areas, many open to the public without charge.

Guest projects open to the public

  • Eames Office – The Eames Houses: archival materials and two large-scale modular pavilions (Eames Pavilion System) that visitors can walk through. Free access to the installations.
  • Frans Dijkmeijer: The Silent Pioneer and other textile-driven projects, with exhibitions and contemporary art interventions in outdoor spaces. Free admission.
  • Gebrüder Thonet Vienna – From Archive to Living Art. Continuum: an audiovisual installation linking historic archive and contemporary art. Free entry.
  • HYLEtech lab and related areas hosting workshops, educational sessions and architectural explorations; participation may be free or require registration.

ADI Design Museum

Location: Piazza Compasso d'Oro 1. Operational period during Design Week: 20–26 April 2026, typical hours 10:30–21:00.

The ADI Design Museum centers on the Compasso d'Oro collection and supplements it with temporary exhibitions, installations and talks that explore Italian design history and contemporary practice.

Practical tips for planning your visit

  • Check ticket details in advance: some exhibitions are free while others require paid tickets or reservations.
  • Book in advance for lectures and high-profile talks (for instance, Toyo Ito’s lecture on 20 April).
  • Use outdoor installations for quick, no-ticket experiences.
  • Verify accessibility information on each museum’s site if you need mobility support or other services.
  • Plan your route to make the most of public transport: Triennale and ADI are central and well connected.
