In the vibrant heart of Naples’ Rione Sanità, where the streets echo with stories of resilience and hope, the Melluso shoe factory was born in 1945—a business dream destined to become a symbol of excellence.

This was the stage on which the curtain rose for Melluso, a name that still today resonates as a symbol of success, quality, and integrity in Italian entrepreneurship. The company, born among the narrow Neapolitan streets, is not only an example of commercial excellence but also an emblem of the deep values that have guided it: the priceless value of family and unwavering faith.

Through decades of change and challenges, the company has remained faithful to these fundamental pillars. Every step forward, every innovation and success, has been imbued with a profound sense of family unity and faith that carried the company through uncertain times.

For more than four generations of “Melluso,” the company has grown exponentially, becoming a proud cornerstone of both Neapolitan and Italian entrepreneurship. Melluso is not just a business—it has always been a family, one that has made unity and love the reason for its growth.

From modest origins in a bustling Neapolitan neighborhood to international recognition, the story of Melluso is a celebration of the essence of Italian entrepreneurship: a blend of passion, resilience, and authentic values.

The birth of Melluso

In Naples’ Rione Sanità, in 1945, a company destined to leave an indelible mark on the Italian footwear industry came to life: Melluso.

Founded by Alfonso Melluso and Addolorata Anastasio, this small business began in a modest workshop in Capodimonte, Naples. With an initial production of about 60 pairs of shoes per day, the activity was based on artisanal methods and a deep passion for quality and innovation.

The support of Salvatore Anastasio, Alfonso’s uncle and already an established entrepreneur in the sector, was fundamental in giving the company momentum in its early years. Under his guidance, Alfonso Melluso and Addolorata learned the importance of combining artisanal tradition with entrepreneurial vision, laying the foundations for sustainable, future-oriented growth.

Expansion soon followed. The success of sales and increased production quickly required a move to a larger plant in Calvizzano, which became the true heart of the company. This new space not only allowed for a significant increase in production but also for experimentation with new techniques and materials, consolidating the brand’s reputation as a synonym for quality and innovation in footwear.

In this context of growth, the youngest of the brothers, Beniamino Melluso—today a board member but then just a child—took his first steps in the family business. His professional growth within the company, paralleling its success story, testifies to the commitment and dedication that have characterized the Melluso family since its beginnings.

“Melluso always walks with you” – The company’s first advertisement

The turning point in Melluso’s history came in 1986, when the brand decided to embark on a bold journey into television advertising—a nearly revolutionary move at the time for a high-fashion footwear company.

That year, Melluso launched its first TV campaign on Italy’s Rai network, choosing to associate its name with prime-time shows hosted by television icons such as Pippo Baudo and Giancarlo Magalli. This decision, a true “gamble,” was based on the belief that television—though considered too popular by other luxury brands like Ferragamo or Sergio Rossi—could actually enhance the brand and bring it closer to a wider audience.

The strategy proved successful: the company’s business soared, reaching 50 billion lire, thanks to a business plan centered on the “3 Ps”: price, product, promotion, with an annual TV advertising investment equal to 10% of turnover.

Fortune further favored the company when, coinciding with Napoli’s football victory, the brand sponsored the then San Paolo Stadium, further cementing its presence in the hearts of Italians. It was in this context that the unforgettable slogans “Melluso – Beautiful and comfortable shoes, always” and “Melluso always walks with you” were born, becoming symbols of the company’s commitment to offering footwear that combines style, comfort, and quality, accompanying its customers’ steps in every moment of life.

The TV campaign was characterized by an innovative and captivating style, designed to capture viewers’ attention and convey the values of quality, comfort, and elegance that have always distinguished Melluso shoes. The investment in television advertising proved to be a huge success, significantly increasing the brand’s national visibility.

This pioneering approach not only exponentially boosted sales but also positioned Melluso as a forward-thinking brand, capable of breaking traditional marketing patterns in the fashion sector. The first TV campaign not only marked a turning point for the company but also influenced how fashion and luxury would use media in the decades to come, proving that even the most exclusive brands could benefit from a smart, well-planned television presence.

The growth and innovation strategy: from production to e-commerce

The story of Melluso is an emblematic example of how a company can be deeply rooted in Italy’s productive fabric while maintaining an open vision toward innovation and expansion. The centrality of Italy in its business strategy is reflected in the choice to concentrate production in the heart of Naples, where creativity and craftsmanship merge in the making of high-quality footwear. This dedication to Italian manufacturing allowed Melluso to reach, in its golden years, an annual production of 1.3 million pairs of shoes, meeting the demand of over a thousand multibrand retailers.

However, the retail landscape is constantly evolving, and Melluso has adapted by reducing its multibrand outlets to fewer than 600 and decisively focusing on monobrand stores, both directly owned and franchised. With 40 stores already open and the goal of expanding by five new stores per year, with an average investment of €300,000 per store, Melluso demonstrates a constant commitment to a cohesive, high-quality brand experience.

2007 marked a turning point with the opening of the first Melluso Store in Lecce, inaugurating a series of openings in key cities such as Milan, Rome, and Naples.

This strategy not only strengthened the company’s physical presence but also created synergies with e-commerce, launched with the aim of reaching an international audience. Although e-commerce still represents a niche for Melluso, with revenues under €1.5 million, the company recognizes the potential of the web as a complementary channel to physical stores, serving as a digital business card for customers worldwide.

Melluso’s production remains faithful to its roots, with most shoes still made in Naples, where they are designed, conceived, and assembled with high-quality leathers and materials supplied by the company itself.

This approach ensures direct control over the quality and authenticity of the finished product. Although part of Melluso’s production takes place in Tuscany or Veneto, and some processes are outsourced to workshops in Eastern Europe, the heart of Melluso’s work remains profoundly Italian—a symbol of a brand that, while expanding and innovating, never forgets its origins and the values that made it a benchmark in the footwear industry.

Melluso, a story of family and Christian faith

The Melluso company is not just a business enterprise, but an example of how the value of family and a deep Christian faith can form the foundation of any life project.

In the fabric of Melluso’s history, faith and family values are intertwined in an inseparable way, creating a profound bond that has defined the very essence of the company. The figure of Salvatore Anastasio, founder of the Evangelical Pentecostal Community of Naples, emerges as a fundamental pillar in this context, having left an indelible mark on the spiritual direction and values that have guided the Melluso family. His influence deeply rooted evangelical Christian faith in the family and professional life of the company, offering not only spiritual guidance but also a model of life based on integrity, community, and service.

It was precisely evangelical Christian faith that gave the Melluso family the strength to face and overcome adversity, transforming challenges into opportunities and hope into reality. The Bible, not merely a sacred text but a true manual for life, played a fundamental role in the lives of the Melluso brothers, teaching them the value of unity, perseverance, and work ethic.

These teachings profoundly shaped their approach to entrepreneurship, where faith and family values have always been considered essential cornerstones. Alfonso Melluso, in fact, was not only an entrepreneur but also served as an evangelical pastor, using the shoe factory premises for religious services as well—a tangible symbol of how faith and work could coexist and enrich one another.

The growth of Melluso, from modest beginnings in a basement to a nationally recognized company with plants in Capodimonte and Calvizzano, is living testimony to how faith and family can be sources of inspiration and unconditional strength.

These values taught the Melluso family to navigate the hardships of the post-war period and economic challenges, always keeping people, community, and integrity at the center. Nearly eighty years of activity have not weakened but rather strengthened their commitment to these principles.

The continuous expansion of the brand

As part of a global expansion strategy and adaptation to the changing post-pandemic market, Melluso continues to grow, projecting itself with determination beyond national borders.

This international vision has materialized through the founding of a new company in Pittsburgh, USA, called Mel.Dock LLC, led by Meghan Hudock as president and Alessia Melluso as vice president.

This strategic move not only marks the company’s entry into the North American market but also opens the door to future investments in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and South America, where demand for quality products is on the rise. The partnership with Meghan Hudock, born from a friendship and shared values discovered through meetings and travels between Italy and the United States, represents a key step in Melluso’s internationalization strategy.

With the exclusive distribution of Melluso products in North America, the company is preparing to navigate new global distribution dynamics, aiming to consolidate its presence in promising foreign markets and diversify its growth opportunities beyond Italian borders.

It was during a recent meeting at the Senate, sponsored by President Lucio Malan and masterfully presented by writer/journalist Alessandro Iovino, that designer Anna Fendi congratulated the two brilliant women leading this American expansion project, wishing them the same success she and her sisters enjoyed with the Fendi brand in the 1970s.
