Opening day: Saturday, May 16, 2026. Marostica welcomes Italy's first museum wholly devoted to chess, located in the rooms of the Castello Inferiore.
The initiative, with a total budget of €668,000, is financed about one third by the Municipality of Marostica and the remainder through PNRR funds. The exhibition highlights both public and private collections and aims to illustrate the history, culture and artistry of chess.
Highlights of the museum
- An exhibition of chess sets and artworks displayed within the historic castle rooms.
- A Donors' Space showcasing pieces from private collections.
- A themed area on war and memory, framing chess within broader historical and cultural narratives.
- Educational programs and activities for enthusiasts, families and schools to engage new generations with the game.
The opening featured the project's promoters, including Giovanni Longo, the museum's initiator, and representatives of the Italian Chess Federation. The new institution is positioned to become a national reference point for chess research and outreach.
