MACRO 2026: the new phase for Rome’s contemporary art museum

MACRO – Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome has announced its 2026 program curated by artistic director Cristiana Perrella (appointed May 2025). The season combines solo shows, interdisciplinary research and institutional collaborations to engage both the city and an international audience.

Curatorial approach

Perrella’s direction emphasizes the blurring of boundaries between creative disciplines and supports works that challenge representation. The aim is to make the museum a permeable space for public debate, experimentation and community-building.

Main exhibitions and projects

  • Hito Steyerl — Mechanical Kurds (video installation): examines AI, digital labor and geopolitical scenarios. Scheduled from 29 April to 30 August.
  • Uno, cinque, dodici. Eighty Years of the Premio Strega: a retrospective that traces the literary prize’s rituals and public moments through an uninterrupted photographic ribbon and a pocket guide of captions.
  • SHE DEVIL: a female-centered video art program rethought as an international platform featuring artists such as Monira Al Qadiri, Cecelia Condit, Raffaella Crispino, Janis Rafa, Marianna Simnett and others.
  • Amelia Rosselli, a song in her space: an audio project curated by Andrea Cortellessa reviving Rosselli’s voice and linguistic research; first phase (29 April – 28 June) focuses on audio materials and the musicality of the texts, followed by an immersive full reading.

Ongoing projects and extensions

  • UNAROMA extended until 3 May 2026 with additional performative events.
  • Abitare le rovine del presente open until 10 May.

Why go

MACRO’s 2026 lineup pairs critical inquiry with audiovisual experiences and curatorial experimentation. It is recommended for visitors interested in contemporary practices that probe social and technological change while engaging with Rome’s creative scene.
