Gallipoli: ban on new licences in the historic centre extended to 2028

Autore: Redazione 01/04/2026 00:47

Extension of the ban on new licences in Gallipoli's historic centre

Gallipoli's local administration has renewed for another three years the prohibition on opening new food and drink businesses within the old town. The restriction, effective since 2017, is part of the Strategic Commerce Plan and will remain in force through 2028.

Main goals of the policy

  • Protect the historic and artistic heritage of the town centre;
  • improve residents' quality of life by reducing traffic, noise and related disturbances;
  • manage tourist flows more sustainably, especially during the summer season.

Key provisions

  • No new openings are allowed within the perimeter of the old-town island, and transfers of premises from other city zones are prohibited;
  • expansions of floor space are permitted only through the merger of existing premises;
  • rules aim to align commercial activity with landscape and monument protection.

The decision also responds to recent recognition of parts of the centre as assets of exceptional historical or artistic value, reinforcing the need for protective measures to preserve the town's image and identity.

Implications for businesses and residents

  • For entrepreneurs: conventional new openings inside the old town will not be authorised; alternatives include merging existing spaces or establishing activities outside the historic island.
  • For residents: the measure seeks to reduce the inconveniences linked to heavy tourist presence and the concentration of commercial activities during peak months.

The extension is intended to balance economic initiative with liveability. Operators and citizens are encouraged to contact municipal offices for details on rules and procedures and to take part in local consultations.
