From 29 April to 27 September 2026 the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria presents "Cinque strade", a retrospective that highlights Lisetta Carmi's most influential period as a photographer.
Curated by Alessandra Mauro and part of the Camera Oscura program, the exhibition features 23 works that trace Carmi's artistic and personal journey, focusing on the reports and portraits that made her a distinctive voice in twentieth-century Italian photography.
The exhibition highlights recurring themes in Carmi's work: respect for her subjects, attention to social margins, the expressive power of portraiture (including the renowned Ezra Pound series) and the important reportage on Genoa's trans community published as I Travestiti (1972).
The Camera Oscura section emphasizes the relationship between light, time and perception: the subdued lighting and contemplative layout are designed to encourage focused viewing and reflection.
Why visit: this well-curated show provides a concise and powerful overview of Lisetta Carmi's contribution to documentary photography and portraiture, suitable for enthusiasts and newcomers to twentieth-century Italian photography alike.
