The Wonders of the Habsburgs: masterpieces from the Kunsthistorisches Museum at Palazzo Cipolla

For the first time in Rome, Palazzo Cipolla presents a selection of more than fifty works from the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The exhibition brings together portraits, Flemish and Dutch painting, sculptures and decorative objects that illustrate the cultural legacy of the Habsburg court.

What the guided tour covers

  • Imperial portraits, including portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth ("Sisi").
  • Drawings by Gustav Klimt linked to classical antiquity and Italian art.
  • Flemish and Dutch highlights: Rubens, Van Dyck, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Frans Hals, Jan Steen.
  • Still lifes and exotic objects: Ming porcelain, the Nautilus cup and cabinets of curiosities.
  • Italian painting of the 16th–17th centuries: Tintoretto, Veronese, Titian, culminating with Caravaggio’s powerful Coronation of Thorns.

Guided tours scheduled: Sunday 22 March at 17:40 and Saturday 16 May at 17:30 (check availability when booking).

Prices:

  • Full: €33 (skip-the-line entry, guided tour and audio receiver)
  • Youths under 18: €25
  • People with disability 100% + companion: €16

Booking required: reservations must be made in writing. Send requests to [email protected] or via WhatsApp/SMS to +39 335 67 47 268 including full name(s), phone number, email and any reductions. Reservation is confirmed only after organizer’s reply.

Important notes:

  • Advance payment is required to limit in-person contact; tickets are non-refundable but transferable.
  • For cancellations, notify at least 48 hours before the visit; otherwise the full fee will apply.
  • Bring disposable earphones for the audio receiver (from 2023 they are charged to reduce plastic use).
  • Animals are generally not allowed in museums and archaeological sites; guide dogs for the visually impaired are permitted.

This guided visit offers historical context and close reading of selected works, ideal for visitors who want to explore the artistic breadth of the Habsburg collections. Groups are limited, so early booking is recommended.
