Week of European Cemeteries at the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno

From 22 to 31 May the Municipality of Genoa, together with the Superintendency for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for Liguria, presents WDEC26, the Week of European Cemeteries promoted by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe. Cofunded by the European Union under the PN Metro Plus and Città Medie Sud 2021-2027 programmes, the initiative features a programme focused on art, culture, memory and the conservation of historic heritage.

All events are free and aimed at a broad audience.

• Opening (Friday 22 May) at the Tempio Laico with a guided tour by art historian Caterina Olcese and a concert by the Classe Musica Insieme Archi of the Niccolò Paganini Conservatory, conducted by Maestro Carlo Costalbano.
• Tuesday 26 May presentation of the project “Museo Staglieno. An accessible and participatory journey through art and history”, supported by FAI and Intesa Sanpaolo; the project introduces new digital content into the city's museum offer via the Musei di Genova website and app.
• Sunday 31 May closing walk “Of water and stone. The ancient aqueduct works at Staglieno”, exploring the link between the historic aqueduct and the complex designed by Carlo Barabino.
• Throughout the week visitors can see the photographic exhibition “Marmo e vecchi merletti”, the documentary Genova Staglieno Ottocento by Sergio Schenone and participate in the online photo contest “Storie di ieri, ispirazioni di oggi”.

The initiative involves ASEF as main sponsor and Iren and Coop as institutional sponsors. The Superintendency will also lead the traditional Restoration Day and various themed routes, including dialect visits, botanical and archival paths.
