Josef Albers: Meditations at Villa and Collezione Panza

Until 10 January 2027, Villa and Collezione Panza in Varese presents "Josef Albers: Meditations", featuring twenty-nine works by the German artist Josef Albers. The exhibition highlights his studies on color and perception, with loans from important public and private collections in Europe and the United States.

Curated by Nicholas Fox Weber at the invitation of Gabriella Belli, the show is conceived as a perceptual itinerary rather than a chronological retrospective. Works displayed on the first floor overlooking the park engage with the spaces to encourage a slow, meditative viewing experience.

Exhibition highlights

• Works on display: 29 selected pieces, including rarely exhibited masterpieces.
• Represented series: Variant/Adobe (1946–1966) and Homage to the Square (1950–1976).
• Notable loans: pieces from international institutions, including loans from the Guggenheim Venice and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris.
• Installation: an arrangement designed to emphasize chromatic and perceptual effects, alternating consonant and dissonant color environments.
• Additional section: video contributions and site-specific works in the Scuderia Grande, featuring Phil Sims’ Stable Paintings and a previously unseen intervention by Richard Nonas.
