Italy and Tunisia: cooperation on cultural heritage in Tunis

On 27 and 28 April 2026, Tunis will host two days dedicated to Italy–Tunisia collaboration in the conservation, restoration and enhancement of monuments and archaeological sites. The event brings together institutions, businesses and research centres to share outcomes, ongoing projects and operational plans.

Where and when: Palazzo Ksar Said, Tunis27–28 April 2026.

Main organizers: national heritage institutes, the Italian Embassy in Tunis, the Italian Cultural Institute and the ICE Office in Tunis.

Program and highlights

  • Business seminar for Italian and Tunisian companies involved in restoration and heritage services.
  • Presentations of Italo‑Tunisian archaeological missions: recent results and future projects, with emphasis on site enhancement.
  • Focus on conservation techniques for mosaics and proposals for centres of restoration excellence.
  • Sessions on skills transfer, specialised training and applied research.

Featured projects and research

Key initiatives include the "Heritage Hub Tunisia" project, aiming to establish a multiservice centre for advanced training in cultural heritage restoration based at the Bardo Museum, and joint archaeological campaigns that produced significant discoveries at Carthage and Thuburbo Maius.

The scope extends beyond mosaics: academic missions have advanced restoration of Roman wall paintings and studies on ancient water management systems in Roman towns—crucial elements for an integrated approach to monument conservation.

Why attend

  • Opportunities for restorers, museums, heritage authorities and cultural companies to discuss techniques, standards and funding avenues.
  • Learn about archaeological work whose results impact the accessibility and presentation of monumental sites to visitors.
  • Discover specialist training initiatives designed to enhance heritage with positive economic and professional effects on the region.

The event is a practical platform to strengthen professional and project partnerships across the Mediterranean and to promote sustainable interventions on historic monuments and sites.
