The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology: the home of Ötzi and a land to discover

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 14:55

In the heart of Bolzano, nestled between the majestic Dolomites and the vibrant rhythm of the city, stands the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. This is not just a museum, but an open gateway to millennia of history — a journey that begins with the first traces of human presence in these valleys and culminates with the most enigmatic and famous figure of the Alps: Ötzi, the Iceman.

Entering here means diving into a distant and fascinating past, discovering the lives, cultures, and secrets of those who inhabited these mountains long before us.

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is internationally recognized as the home of Ötzi, the man from Similaun — a prehistoric mummy discovered in 1991 in the Ötztal Alps, an extraordinary natural miracle of preservation. His discovery revolutionized our understanding of the Copper Age and offered a unique opportunity to study not only the life and death of a man but also the broader archaeological history of the entire Alpine region, from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages.

A Journey Through Time: From the Origins to the Romans

The museum’s exhibition is arranged both chronologically and thematically, guiding visitors through the different eras that shaped South Tyrol. Each section is a chapter in this captivating story, beginning with the Stone and Copper Ages, where artifacts and reconstructions tell of the first hunter-gatherer communities and early agricultural settlements. Flint tools, bone implements, and the first pottery pieces reveal a primitive yet remarkably resourceful way of life.

The Bronze Age section illustrates the rise of metallurgy and the development of more complex societies, showcasing weapons, jewelry, and ritual objects that reflect evolving technologies and spiritual beliefs.

Moving into the Iron Age, South Tyrol becomes a crossroads of cultures. The museum displays finds from the La Tène and Hallstatt cultures — iron tools, fibulae (brooches), and funerary objects that reveal Celtic and Illyrian influences on local populations.

Finally, the Roman period is explored through military artifacts, household items, and inscriptions, documenting the integration of the region into the Roman Empire, its Latinization, and the creation of the first communication routes across the Alps.

Ötzi: The Iceman and His Secrets

The highlight of the visit is undoubtedly the section dedicated to Ötzi. Here, visitors enter a specially designed, climate-controlled environment to view the Similaun mummy, preserved inside a refrigerated cell under optimal conditions.

The museum also displays Ötzi’s extraordinarily well-preserved belongings — his bow, quiver with arrows, copper axe, dagger, and leather and fur clothing.

Thanks to advanced scientific research, the exhibition presents the latest findings on his diet, health, ancestry, and the mysterious circumstances of his death. This encounter offers a rare and moving opportunity to come face-to-face with a tangible fragment of human history — one that speaks to the fragility, endurance, and ingenuity of our ancient ancestors.

A Center for Research and Education

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology is not just a space for display; it is an active research and educational center. It regularly organizes temporary exhibitions, conferences, workshops, and educational programs that explore archaeological and scientific themes related to the region and to Ötzi himself.

Its multidisciplinary approach — combining archaeology, glaciology, anthropology, and forensic medicine — makes it an international point of reference for the study of mummies and prehistoric life.
