The MAGEM: where art meets the blue of the Adriatic in Sirolo

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 14:21

In the heart of the Marche region—land of charming villages, gentle hills, and an Adriatic coastline of rare beauty—lies a unique treasure: the Museum of Art on the Sea (MAGEM). This is not a traditional museum enclosed within four walls, but an open-air artistic experience, where artworks interact with the endless marine horizon, rugged cliffs, and the lush Mediterranean scrub of the Conero Park. Located in San Benedetto del Tronto, a jewel of the Conero Riviera, the MAGEM embodies an innovative concept of art appreciation, immersing creativity in a natural context that amplifies its meaning and emotional impact.

An Idea Born from the Sea

The idea of creating a diffuse museum that enhances the bond between art and nature was born from the vision of local artists and enthusiasts fascinated by the allure of the Conero’s coastal landscapes. Rather than confining art within conventional exhibition spaces, they chose to free it—making it accessible to everyone walking along the panoramic trails overlooking the sea. The MAGEM has no single entrance or fixed opening hours: it is a path, a sensory journey that winds along specific sections of the coast, inviting visitors to slow down, observe, and contemplate.

The Works: Sculptures in Dialogue with the Landscape

The collection consists mainly of sculptures, created from materials resistant to the elements—stone, wrought iron, carved wood, ceramics, and even recycled materials—chosen for their ability to interact and harmonize with the surrounding environment. Themes often revolve around the sea, nature, humanity, and the relationship between people and the landscape.

Each sculpture is positioned strategically. Artists and curators carefully studied the ideal location for every work, taking into account light, perspective, and even the sound of the waves and the wind. Some sculptures may appear unexpectedly among the vegetation, others stand proudly against the blue of the sky and sea, while others blend perfectly with the rock on which they rest. In this way, the landscape itself becomes an integral part of the artwork, creating a continuous and surprising dialogue.

An Emotional and Sensory Journey

Visiting the MAGEM engages all the senses. Along the trails, the scent of the Mediterranean scrub mixes with sea salt, the sound of the waves accompanies your steps, and your eyes open to breathtaking views. Each artwork becomes a moment of reflection—a reason to pause and think about the relationship between humanity, art, and unspoiled nature.

The museum is constantly evolving. New works are periodically added or replaced, thanks to collaborations with both emerging and established artists, locally and nationally. This dynamism ensures that the MAGEM remains a living source of inspiration, offering new perspectives with every visit.

The MAGEM and the Enhancement of the Territory

Beyond its artistic value, the MAGEM plays a key role in promoting and enhancing the Conero area. It attracts a more conscious form of tourism, encouraging sustainable exploration of this protected environment. The presence of the artworks motivates visitors to explore lesser-known trails, discover hidden corners of the coast, and immerse themselves fully in the region’s natural beauty.

The museum also serves as a cultural meeting point and open-air art laboratory, hosting events, workshops, and educational activities that raise awareness about environmental preservation and stimulate creativity, especially among younger generations.

How to Experience the MAGEM

To fully enjoy the MAGEM experience, comfortable shoes and an unhurried pace are recommended. There is no rush—the rhythm is set by nature and contemplation. The paths hosting the artworks are well marked, but consulting maps or local guides is advised for optimal planning.

Admission is free and open to everyone. The Museum of Art on the Sea in San Benedetto del Tronto is not only a place to admire art, but an invitation to experience art in a deeper, more engaging way.
