Castle of Santo Niceto – a Byzantine fortress overlooking Reggio Calabria

History and Description

The Castle of Santo Niceto, also known as Motta Sant’Aniceto, is a Byzantine fortress dating back to the first half of the 11th century, perched atop a rocky hill overlooking the city of Reggio Calabria, near the town of Motta San Giovanni. It is one of the very few examples of early medieval Byzantine architecture still visible in Calabria.

Built as a kastron, the castle served a defensive and refuge function during Saracen raids, protecting valuable goods such as silk, which was essential to the Byzantine economy. Even after the Norman conquest in 1060, the castle continued to be used for territorial surveillance and defense of the Reggio area.

Over the centuries, the structure was involved in the conflicts between the Angevins and the Aragonese, and in 1434 it became a barony, extending its domain over Motta San Giovanni, Montebello, and Paterriti. One of the most curious episodes dates back to 1459, when the people of Reggio, using a nighttime ruse involving goats with lit lanterns on their horns, managed to capture the castle.

The structure has an irregular layout resembling the shape of a ship, with the bow facing the mountain and the stern toward the sea. Well-preserved elements include sections of walls up to 3.5 meters high, two square towers, the imposing entrance portal, and remains of water cisterns and watchtowers. At the foot of the hill stands the Church of the SS. Annunziata, featuring a frescoed dome with the traditional Christ Pantocrator, in full Byzantine style.

After centuries of abandonment, the castle has been restored and enhanced, becoming one of the rare examples of a recovered and accessible Byzantine kastron in Calabria.

Curiosities

It is the only pre-Norman military complex in Calabria that remains almost intact.

The name “Santo Niceto” comes from the devotion of Sicilian refugees, who dedicated it to Saint Nicetas, a Byzantine admiral who lived between the 7th and 8th centuries.

The walls are built with squared stone, brickwork, and highly resistant mortar, which has ensured the structural integrity over the centuries.

Access Information and Directions

To reach the castle, from Motta San Giovanni drive approximately 2 km to the area of S. Basilio, then turn left following the signs. After a little more than 3 km, you’ll arrive at the base of the hill.

The castle is accessible on foot via a scenic trail surrounded by Mediterranean scrub, with prickly pear, olive trees, and oaks.

A free parking area is available nearby.
