On May 17 Italy dons the colours of the rainbow

May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), is observed as a moment to raise awareness on rights and inclusion for LGBTQI+ people. Across Italian cities, institutions, associations and sports organisations are staging cultural, social and sporting events to celebrate diversity and counter discrimination.

UISP reaffirms its commitment to making sport a vehicle for inclusion: prioritising openness and participation over performance. Local experiments and ongoing projects combine sporting activities, training and support services.

  • Sportello Q (Milan): an information and support desk for members and affiliates addressing anti-discrimination issues and everyday challenges in sports practice.
  • Calcio Uisp Bologna: a tournament registered as female but open to non-binary and trans identities, which has grown to 17 teams across Bologna, Ferrara and Modena.
  • ToHousing (Turin): a cohousing initiative for LGBTQI+ people in fragile conditions, offering physical activity and inclusion programmes run by UISP and local partners.
  • Festa dello #sportpertuttə (Parma): two days of free sports, workshops, talks and music scheduled for Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 May at Parco della Cittadella; the book presentation of Valentina Petrillo is set for 16 May.

These activities reflect a sustained approach: for UISP the effort extends beyond a single commemorative day and continues throughout the sporting season with programmes, training and dialogue to foster accessible and respectful sport.
